Similar Product to ours

Our film is in many ways simular to psycho ! however some elements are very different. firstly like psycho we have very dark lighting and obscured camara angles which almost confuse and grip the audience with fear of the unknown. We are balancing diagetic and non diagetic cound well with speech and tense music to keep the audience on the edge of there seats. mise en scene is alot similar also we to have a knife as our murder weapon and blood splattered pathments and such. our character however are dressed far more modernly giving our film the 21 centure twist. make up and props will be used just to add extra to our murder scenes and tense atmospheres. We are also like psycho using to camera points of view which is our point of view and a third person point of view to add another dimension than just one point of view.

Shot list

By creating a shot list, your entire production runs more efficiently because everything gets shot based on the location and setup, as opposed to the order scenes appear in the script. A shot list is similar to a storyboard because it identifies what's being shot. A shot list can be easily distributed to cast and crew and gets the director, cinematographer and the rest of the crew on the same page, especially when shooting the scenes that haven't been storyboarded.
Here is our shot list and shows what elements scene shot and the description of the shot.In our film we used a variety of locations including offices, schools and the car we used one of our group members streets also. we added in the camera shots also and some lighting effects information.

Storyboard

Here is just one slide of our storyboard this one shows the car used for the kidnapping fleeing the scene of the crime with adam in the boot as the kidnapped young man.it is a close up shot lasting around 2seconds.This will also be quick to film as will have seperated the shotlist for different locations, that way we wont need to keep travelling back to locations to film other bits. The shotlist contains different areas, number of scene to show the order, the shot titale so we know roughly what it is about and the overal description to show what will exactly be going on in the shot. Also we have included an elements section this includes the vital elements that will be encorporated into the shot aswell as some of the camera shots we feel will work well. Following this we plan on making a story board to show the different scenes in picture and how the story will flow.

Filming and editing

We have completed our opening filming sequences and have uploaded onto adobe premier pro. we have edited the title sequence also thanks to the help of this video, And i will update later. My next post will be a comparison between a similar film as our idea has changed due to unforseen events.

Recce Shots

Today we went around school and our local area taking recci shots of potential areas and propse we are going to use to create our film opening. Thesewould then create an image of we could expect the film to look like and if they are the right option.
This is a room within the school we are considering using it as an office and a workplace for Danyy and John. We feel with a bit of reorgansing it could look ideal for an office environment and will match exactly what we are after. Especially with all of the computers and desks.

This will be our get away vehicle for the kidnap and the car the drug dealers own. It is teh only car we have access to but will be a vitle prop in the film. The back of the car will important as it will be shown when the kidnap takes place and when the car gets away. With the dark tinited windows it adds mystery and crime.

This is inside the boot where we will put John Peters the victim.

We plan on shooting inside the car when the two drug dealers will talk to one another.

This is where we plan doing the kidnap it is a local area down a side street, close by a bus stop where we will make it seem as though John has just got off.
These are the pretend drugs we have created from cling film, duc tape, flour and paracetemol, we will see danny reveal these in the footage.
This is a hall way in school we plan on using it as a hall way in the office work place this is where the swap of the parcels take place, we feel it looks professional and like how we invisioned.
This is the exact spot we plan on filming the kidnap. It is a quite area so we should have no problem filming here, we plan on filming it at dusk so it will seem more intense. It is also near a residential area so we know Danny is on his way home.
This is a road up to the scene of the kidnap, we are considering using these as footage when driving to show the fast pace and rush of action to create drama.
This is the front of the get way vehicle

Main props

We have managed to gather together a number of vital props we feel will be important and will add to the genre of an action film. These all are usually seen in action movies so we thought that they were the most important props to include in ours to try and portray teh genre aswell as we could.

The fake blood capsules we have purchased are goind to be used in the interrogation scene to make the attacked look more realistic.

The balaclavas are a typical prop used in a criminal attack, so we thought they would be nessescary when carrying out the cirme of the kidnap.

The Duct Tape is used to retain John Peters in the interrogation room.
The pen knife is a weapon used by John as he escapes his way out of the duc tape
The car is used for the kidnap and is most probably the most important prop as allows the kidnap to take place and for them to get away.

The gun we are using is very realistic and will be used to threaten John, again a prop in lmost every action film so an important thing for us to include.

Main idea, props, mise-en-scene,settings and characters

Title
Mistaken Identity - We feel as though this is a great title for our film as the guy who is kidnapped has been mistaken for someone else, as he is innocent, or is he ?

Plot/Outline Summary
Two men work at the same office, John Peters and Danny Stevens, we seem them both take phone calls at the start from this we tell that John is your normal man waiting to go home after the mail is handed out. As for Danny, he acts suspicous taking his phone call outside, we realise he is up to something when he speaks privatley and by his conversation on the phone.
Both men bump into eachother on the way out and accidently switch packages. When Danny walks out of work and meets his boss in the car park he finds out it is not his package and that the other package with 50 thousand pounds worth of drugs is in Johns Hands. His Boss 'Steven Graham' gets annoyed and plans an action to get the drugs back. Later that evening John is almost home but unfortunatley he gets kidnapped by the two men, loading him in the boot they head off quickly in their get away vehicle. Unfortunatley leaving Johns bag which he dropped and the drugs behind.
In the next scene we see them interrogating John in a dark room he gts beaten up and threatend at gun point, still denying any inolvement with the drugs. The question who he works for and believe he has done this on purpose.
We then see John slip a small knife from up his sleeve and relieve his hands form tape on the chair he is attached to. Danny has no clue of this. John knocks the gun out of his hand and smacks it across the room, the scene goes black and a gun shot is let off, but who is killed? and is John really innocent?

Opening Sequence
We start the whole film with subtitles showing the directors and actors with intense music in the background which gives the viewer and incline of what type of movie they expect. We then introduce the characters by both main characters, Danny and John answer a phone simoltaniously, their converstaions tell you abit about each charcater. The first shot is a close up of a phone and a match on action followed by the same but with Dannys mobile. This keeps people wondering what is happening.

Characters (genre, role, image etc)
The main character John Peters is played by Adam Lomas, he is an innocent and friendly looking guy, who is dressed smartly. We wanted him o look this way as we want people to establish he is going to be the victim and the innocent one in this straight away. A innocent victime is always a stereotypical character you will find in most action movies getting caught up in the drama so we thought it would be important to include this role in ours.

The bad guy also a main character is Danny Stevens, played by Dominic Clarke, he is part of the drug deal and works at the same office as John. He seems suspicious to the audience in the way he acts as his role is suppose to be someone you cant trust and a bad person.

The other main character is Steven Graham, played by Bradley Roche, dressed in a suit and Shades it shows is importance and dominance over Danny. He is represented as the big, tough guy and leader especially when we see danny calling him boss. This character is typical of what you will find in an action movie as their is always a leader, someone callin all the shots.

The next character is less important, he is a mail boy in the workplace, played by Roberto Pinto. He stars in the small section handing out the vital mail that they all desperatley want, mainly Danny. Dress casually smart he represnts the charcater and role well.

Mis-en-scene
The workplace will be filmed inside the school during the day time, it is down a quite corrider which resembles your usual office workplace. We use an office phone and computer to make it seem realistic and to keep the theme clear to people. The kidnapp will be filmed at dusk as it adds supcious and eery feel to the footage. Darkness always represnts bad things.

Settings
Dark garage
Outside in quiet area
Office
School office workplace
Car

Locations
School interior for office workplace shots, this is easy to acces and ideal appearance.
A local quite resdiential street for kidnapping to show John is head home.
A local business 'Olympus House' this will the workplace exterior for when both men walk out of work to make it seem more realistic.
Dom's car will be used as the get away car and interior shots will be vital.
Bradleys garage will be used for the interrogation scene as it seems dark and eery.

Costumes
Danny and JOhn will both be wearing shirts and ties to show that they are both at work, John looks very representable to show he is the kind and innocent charcater.
Steven Graham the head gangster will be wearing a full suit and sunglasses. this shows his power instantly as it is a stereotypical symbol for power and leadership.

Props
A prentend Gun, this is vital to show power and violence, included in almost every action movie.
Fake Drugs, these are use to look realistic and will play a part to allow the viewers to understand the plot.
Telephone in office
Mobile phone
Letters
Johns bag
Fake blood
Balaclavas

Mood board

This is a mood board I have created revolving around action and thriller movie genre as it is what we have now selected. Some of the pictures are scenes from famous movies we are going to use to guide our idea aswell as some of the props.

Ideas response from class

After gathering all of the feedback we have decided that Idea 1 will be our best option and is by far our strongest. We have lots of further ideas we are going to contribute to improve on the breif idea. This was the response from our class mates when we presented our intial ideas, here is some of teh questions they asked and answers we gave along with their overall feedback:

Idea 1:
(Q) Dom: "How is the man going to get hold of the drugs?"
(A): "He is going to be working in the same building as this drug dealer/gangster, the drugs get mixed up as they both have similar packages and everything gets muddled when the postboy delivers the mail. They both have no time to check the name on the front as they both want to get home"

(Q)Ben: "Where is the kidnap going to take place?"
(A): "The kidnap will be down a narrow path near nightime whilst nobody is aorund it will be quick and realistic as the capture him from behind"

(Q) James: "How will you insure you adapt the action genre throughout the film?"
(A) "We will do this as we are going to have fast paced snappy shots making it seem fast and intising to the viewer. We are going to add music when the kidnappers are in the car driving to the man and when they kidnap him. There will be intense music playing through. The fast car iss symbolic of an action film as is the gun, violence and chase."

- "this idea is strong and seems well planned"
- "the drug mix up may need to planned a little better to be more realistic but apart from that if everything is planned well it sounds like a very good idea"

Idea 2:
(Q) Lauren: "What is the plot for the car chase?"
(A) "being one of our weaker ideas we have not yet established how we are going to show the plot but it will be obvious they are chasing them for a reason and wnat to harm them as they reveal a gun"

(Q) Dom: "Where will you do this car chase, without causing any harm?"
(A) "we plan on doing the car chase on a parkway at dusk keeping an eery feel. We will do it at a time when the roads are almost empty, we will not be driving and no more than the speed limits this shouldnt be an issue and will still look fast on camera."

(Q) Curtis: "What will happen when the car chase is over?"
(A) "we will pull into a secure empty area near a field and get out of the car, one man will say to the other 'that was way to close'. Both will then walk into the bush and bury something"

- "this idea seems less achievable than the first but still has the main aspects of the genre of an action film"
- "the best part of this film will be the ending as it leaves the audience with suspense, the car chase may not look as good as you expect as you havent got the camera technologies and your first idea certainly seems the strongest."

Idea 3
(Q) Ben: "Where and when will you film the mugging?"
(A) "we will film it down a long narrown path where there is hardly anybody about as it is surround by fields, it is local so easy to get to. It will be filmed at dusk which will create a scarier feel"

(Q) Curtis: "how do you plan on filming the chase?"
(A) "We plan on using track shots for parts of it, but mainly panning shots as the camera looks from a distance, again we will keep the shots very short and snappy to keep up the pace of the movement, allowing the viewer to be part of the chase. ANother way we can keep it fast paced is by using a variety of shots, close-ups and extreme close ups and establishing, also the angles changing this will keep the viewer interested."

(Q) Lauren: "is there going to be any dialogue?"
(A) "we dont plan on including alot in this idea as we think it doesnt need much to make sense especially when its so fast paced we dont think it will fit in much. There will be some shouting form the woman and pedestrains, but the main sounds will be the panting from the running of the mugger to feel we are running with him. At the end we plan on the mugger saying 'Finally' whilst look at the usb, it will then cut black"

- "This also one of your best ideas with one and out weighs idea two. The storyline seems easy to follow but very effective"
- "This seems like a very strong idea and has a good story line and good ideas about the filming of it. But I feel it might be quite short so you may have to film more detail at the start. Having said that I feel Idea one is your strongest and best option"

Filming today and organising group

We are filming today and hope to get most done so we can get back to edit we are on a tight time and we only have a week and a bit to finish all productions but we can do it and make it look good. W ehave managed to organised our group to film today from 12.45-4 and then 8-9 sometimes its hard to organise our group but we managed to do so by using twitter.
Here we have organised our group today and filming will hopefully go to plan

Risk assesment

Carrying out a risk assessment helps us determine any risks not just to us but the community and other students. we have made sure that whilst in our car scene we are not exceeding speed limits and just edit it to make it look like we are going faster. also we are making the kidnapping as real as possible so any members of the public will be informed that its a educational video. It has been brought to my attention that we need to ask permission of the land owners to film on there property and therefore will be drafting a letter to them and will be posting it on here as soon as we are able.secondally because we are using a fake gun the local police have to be informed so residents dont call them and tell them we have a gun and just stops and misunderstandings.

Youtube channel for Lunatic productions

We have created a you tube channel so we can get feedback on our ideas and prelimary exercise here is a print screen to show the layout and our videos.

With a Youtube channel we can gain feedback on our tasks and hopefully improve out productions.

Our production name and logo

This is a logo we have created to represent our name 'Lunatic Productions'

The production company may be directly responsible for fundraising for the production or may accomplish this through a parent company, partner, or private investor. It handles budgeting, scheduling, scripting, the supply with talent and resources, the organization of staff, the production itself, post-production, distribution, and marketing. Production companies are often either owned or under contract with a media conglomerate, film studio, entertainment company, or Motion Picture Company, who act as the production company's partner or parent company. This has become known as the "studio system". They can also be mainstream independent (see Lucasfilms) or completely independent (see Lionsgate). In the case of TV, a TV production company would serve under a television network. Production companies can work together in co-productions.

Preliminary excercise

Here is our preliminary excercise. our task was to film a short film which included a opening of a door and a short conversation. It took a short while to film but a long time to edit as we were just getting used to the programme premier pro.

Analysis of a similar production

Trailer
Action/thriller
Codes and conventions

The film trailer starts with an establishing wide shot which sets the scene for the film and mood of the film.there is a straight cut between each scene and goes to a longshot of the importanat figure arriving at the speech location. the lighting used here is mainly key and filler lighting to show the bright city and the presidant arriving. There is straight cuts between two scenes which show snipers on the roof tops which highlights the high security and risk of the presidant talking about terriorist organisations. The presidant then takes to the stage and gives a speech to lots of people there is lots of diagetic sounds including the sound of the crowd and some non diagetic sounds with a voice over telling us of what the presidant is talking about.. Also the lighting in this scene is key and filling a the filler ligh adds a darker coulor ot the scene showing the dark mood. there is a longshot of the presidant and then straight cuts to other characters which show there view point of the assination. the director uses close ups of the 7 characters to give the viewer detail visual descriptions so they know all the characters and there points of view.Through the build-up of tension and the use of big name actors it is the thriller genre at its best especially with the well timed calm and then chaotic moments of the trailer.

Recce shots update

We went out yesterday to scout some recce shots and found some good places to film we will upload the pictures up soon.

Our final film idea

Here we have carried out some research on a variety of students in our school ranging from 16-24 and both genders. We asked them there favourite film genre and collaborated with each member of my media group who also carried out surveys on students and have come to the conclusion that the most popular film genre is Action thriller. We have therefore choosen the genre of Action thriller for our film opening.

Action thriller films have high octane action and have car chases fight scene etc and we have a good idea that will fit the codes and conventions of a action thriller.

Our idea that we have come up with is a kidnapping, this takes place in a local office and there are two parcels that get mixed up with two different people and the package ends up in the wrong hands. There are two parcels one contains drugs and the other innocent books and papers. However the person who ends up with the package with the drugs sells them. The two packages were mixed up in a local office and therefore the person whos drug they were Danny stevens (dom) hunts down his work collegue kidnaps him and interigates him what he did with the drugs and who has them but will he give in or will it all end in bloodshed?

300 opening scene

300 is a 2007 American action film based on the 1998 comic series of the same name by Frank Miller. Both are fictionalized retellings of the Battle of Thermopylae. The film was directed by Zack Snyder, while Miller served as executive producer and consultant. It was filmed mostly with a super-imposition chroma key technique, to help replicate the imagery of the original comic book.

Codes and conventions of a film opening

Code and Conventions of Film Openings In movie openings you will always have the production logos and distribution logos Of the main companies that work on the movie. Depending on the budget of the film/hype -created for the film these logos will be edited in a form related to the movie, such as in 300 the WarnerBros logo is made to look like a shield and is worn away and dirty. This is to reflect the story line of the film. Generally the opening shot of a film will be either an establishing shot or a blank screen with titles on. These title screens can also be a way of building up suspense and also giving away the genre of the movie to the audience. A good example of this can be the movie Scream, where Scream sounds, Sirens and also heartbeats are played over the titles. The title of the movie also appears in blood red and comes on as if being slashed by a knife.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFCStOMqpfk) – Youtube video of opening
A convention of Slasher movies they will tend to open up by showing the characters in the movie but clearly pointing out each stereotype such as the 'Busty Blonde' Arrogant Male' and 'Virginal Girl' They will also tend to clearly point out what the villain is, such as with a phone call or another hint. (Link to Scream video also shows this)

In films that are using big stars, they will try to show as many of these actors as possible to show the audience that they are important and also will attract the attention more as the audience will like to see what their part is in the film. Some films however will not show the stars that are used inthe beginning. This is either to surprise the viewers later, or just watch in suspense until they arrive on screen. If amovie is using many big stars, the audience will be mostlikely going just to see those actors, not exactly because of the story so the audience will want tosee their favourite actor as soon as possible and as much aspossible. An example of this is when Hugh Grant featuresin a romantic comedy, they will generally use him as theselling point, and therefore, will be witnessed in the firstfew shots. Some films will also try to get as many inter-textual references as they can to filmsmade before the film which will help the audience reference it to a prequel or filmsthat it has looked at for reference as in, If it is a sequel it will generally show something which the audience will automatically recognize as being that movie e.g.in Bride of Chuckie There are many inter-textual references to horror movies made

300 Nine frames for title sequence

300

Here we can see the Nine frames from the Film 300s open sequence.

The first frame shows a violent encounter between the two sides that fight in this film ! it is in black and white but there are some orange coulors to light the frame up. it show the frames in these coulors because the mood is quiet dingy and sets the mood of the film well with dark dull coulors.
The second frame like the rest of the frames shows dark coulors and introduces the producer the main player in making this film.
The third frame is the name of the film it almost looks like it was written in blood which goes with the films gory genre. The following 4frames are just as similar with different fighting artwork being portrayed. And the last frame is of the finally splash of blood across the frame to symbolise the last battle in this film.

BBFC

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), originally British Board of Film Censors, is a non-governmental organisation, funded by the film industry and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films within the United Kingdom. It has a statutory requirement to classify videos, DVDs and some video games under the Video Recordings Act 2010. The BBFC publishes short but detailed information about all the films and videos we rate. This is called BBFCinsight. It gives parents a clear idea of how and why films have been rated and what issues the films contain.
BBFCinsight helps parents, carers and other viewers make informed choices about what they watch. It is displayed under the title and running time for each film.

Codes and Conventions
Audio codes, the opening scene is full of mainly speech. The characters also have italian accents. there is imited background noise and speech directed  towards  an unknown character which turns out (3.08) to be the mafia don.there is a silence when the don is thinking about the proposal to add suspense.
technical codes, in the opening scene there are several camera shots , the first camera shot used is the over shoulder shot which is used to shows the character is talking  to a unknown character , shown as a dark shadow . Also another camera shot used is the close up of the don which shows in great detail who he is and is useful as it is the main character in the godfather. the lighting is very dark to add to the crime thriller genre effect.
symbolic codes in the opening scene of the godfather the clothing is formal dress to show the characters are gangsters and show the severity of the situation. also the props are limited with a dog being used as a typical accessories for a gangsters.

Codes and conventions

What is a code and convention ? code and conventions are vital in films and consist of these main things : music, script, costumes, camera angles and framing, are used. However these are only a few examples of film codes. It is the way that these are used which is known as conventions that helps us understand which characters are playing each role in the story. Directors can use codes and conventions to encourage us to like or dislike a character and also help us to understand how important each character is in the story. for example if a character was walking into a bank and tense dark music was playing we would expect that character to be bad.

what codes and conventions are used in film openings?
There are three main tpes of codes and conventions those are
  • audio codes,( the words that are spoken, how they are spoken and silence in the film) .
  • symbolic codes, (this is the overall look of a character eg accessories and makeup )
  • technical codes, (these are the camera angles lighting framing and shot duration )

Media assignment one

The first camera angle i chose from this trailer  is a close up  ( 0.09)
the close up shows the bank robbers in detail which becomes more important as the film goes along and we get to see who the robbers are.
The second camera angle i chose was a extreme close up (0.12)
This shows one of the main characters that the film is based upon and shows him in great detail so the view can get to know all the character well before watching the film.
The third camera angle i chose was a over the shoulder shot (0.40)
between tommy and turkish the main characters in the film
The last camera and i used was a two shot (0.54)

Continuity

In fiction, continuity  is consistency of the characteristics of persons, plot, objects, places and events seen by the reader or viewer over some period of time. It is of relevance to several media.
Continuity is particularly a concern in the production of film and television due to the difficulty of rectifying an error in continuity after shooting has wrapped up. It also applies to other art forms, including novels, comics, anime, videogames and animation, though usually on a smaller scale.

Here we can say some movie mistakes from star wars continutity errors are anything from different clothes or different props used !

Here we can see there are a few bushes in the background of the shot.

However when the footage is cut to the next scene they have vanished. this may show they have used a different location to the first shot or different place.

Shot reverse shot

Shot reverse shot is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other. Shot reverse shot is a feature of the "classical" Hollywood style of continuity editing, which deemphasizes transitions between shots such that the spectator perceives one continuous action that develops linearly, chronologically, and logically. It is an example of an eyeline match.

Match on action

Match on action means when something happens in the scene then when here is a cut the same piece of action must be going on this is an example on continuity editing and is very important as it helps the audience understand what is going on. it focuses in on the particular prop in this case its a book and makes the prop the main section of the film and show the audience either an important or memorable item.

In filmmaking, the 180° rule is a basic guideline that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line. The new shot, from the opposite side, is known as a reverse angle.
